Abstract:

The research presented in this portfolio illustrates the development of a compositional style that focuses on the application of unprocessed instrumental samples as source material for electro-acoustic composition. I endeavoured to retain the richness of expression associated with live instrumental music within the electronic elements of my work.

The main aim of my research was to expand upon the inherent timbral complexity of an instrument by layering and blending samples of that instrument into a composite mass of sound. Recordings were made in collaboration with specific musicians and concentrated on capturing the large variety of sounds that could be produced on each individual instrument.

In total, nine pieces were composed between 2005 and 2008. The following instruments were sampled in detail during this period: voice, piano, violin, percussion, bass clarinet, cello and the adapted viola (The adapted viola was invented by the composer Harry Partch. It provides the performer with an extended range due to its lengthened neck. This enables microtonal pitches to be produced more effectively).

The two acoustic pieces in the portfolio arose directly from the material and ideas developed during my research. They illustrate how the concept and working methods employed in the electro-acoustic pieces were transferred to the live domain.
